How to import STEP file in SOLIDWORKS?

Importing STEP file in SOLIDWORKS

Working in industry involves communication with clients, contractors, etc.  From a computer aided design (CAD) perspective it means being able to exchange and use models from different software platforms.  A common question we receive is SolidWorks compatibility with other software packages.

For example, assume a client uses a different CAD system and has sent us a *.step file containing the part model.  In this case the part is a base plate.  In order to open the part in SolidWorks we must import the part and use feature recognition.

Select File>Open and browse for the *.step file to open it.

A pop-up window will appear asking to create a new SolidWorks part.  Select yes to accept

A new pop-up window will appear asking whether you would like to run import diagnostics.

Import diagnostics checks the part model for errors.  By selecting OK, the Import Diagnostics ran on our part and did not detect any errors.

Further, you will be prompted whether you want to run Feature Recognition.

SolidWorks Feature Recognition(FEATUREWORKS)

Feature Recognition will attempt to construct the model using Solidworks features and tools.  If you chose not to run feature recognition, the part will exist as a single solid body model.  By accepting Feature Recognition and running it, the part is now deconstructed into a sketch and an extrude boss command.

By inspecting the sketch you’ll find undefined entities used to create the solid body.

Please note that there are many import and export options for SolidWorks.  All import and export options are summarized in the table below:

Weldments in SolidWorks Simulation

SolidWorks Simulation is a powerful tool to analyse and predict how a component will react under loading conditions.  It uses the finite element method to divide the subject model into smaller elements for analysis.  The method and classification of this division can determine the accuracy and speed at which your simulation will run.

In the case of weldments similar to the sample beam as shown below, they are treated differently than a typical solid in solidworks simulation.

solidworks simulatio

Weldments are treated by default as beam elements which have joints at junctions and connection points.  In our example we have a simple cantilever beam therefore only two joints exist represented by the yellow spheres in the graphical area.

weldment joints- solidworks simulation

If you need to edit the joints groups, right click the “Joint Groups” and select edit.  This will allow you to edit joints in the properties box.

When applying the fixtures and loads we may do so normally, however keep in mind that point load and fixtures are to be applied on the joints.  To do so, select the joint icon before you select the location and apply the load to your model.

solidworks simulation- applying load

Our model is fixed on one end and the force is set to 100N downward on the other end.  When meshed the weldment will appear differently than most common tetrahedral mesh as shown below

solidworks simulation meshing

Running the simulation and superimposing the original model we find that the maximum deflection is given by 0.108mm.

Alternatively, you are also able to select a weldment and specify that the program treat the 3D model as a solid as with standard tetrahedral mesh.  To do so, right click the weldment body and select “Treat as Solid” from the menu.

In doing so you will have to reapply your fixtures, forces and mesh to the model.  The equivalent study in solid mesh format is as shown below

You have the option to apply the applicable type of element that best suits your model.

Interference Detection:SolidWorks Assembly Evaluation Tool

Interference Detection: Egg in a Box

Scavenger hunts has the potential to yield prizes.  In this hypothetical example we have found a simple colored egg as shown below

inteference detection is solidworks assembly

In order to display our prize we have crafted a wooden box to frame the egg

solidworks assembly evaluation tool

An assembly is created fitting the egg inside the box to show a preview of how the finished display box will look like.

solidworks assembly

However once an assembly is created, you may use a SolidWorks assembly evaluation tool called Interference Detection to determine whether there is any interference between the egg and the box.  i.e. does it fit?

Select the Evaluate tab> Interference Detection

Once the assembly is selected, click “calculate”

interference detection of solidworks assembly

SolidWorks has determined that this assembly has interference and has highlighted it in our model.

intereference detection in solidworks

This simple checking tool has highlighted a design flaw allowing us to make modifications in the design phase which has less impact on the product as opposed to after the part has been manufactured, saving us money.

A quick modification of the inside dimension from 100mm to 110mm is applied to our box.

Now, we run our second interference check for verification and indeed the box is of correct size.  This box will now properly display our prize as intended.
